The Kent Advanced Motorcyclists Group (KAMG)
was formed in 1979/1980 to provide the 'facility for
motorcyclists to improve their standards of riding
and machine control to IAM standards'. Also to provide the opportunity for motorcyclists to
socialise. They met monthly at Brands Hatch and attracted members from all over Kent,
becoming the first group to break the IAM mould of combined car and bike groups. The
KAMG meets on the last Thursday of each month at Brands Hatch.
In 1988 a proportion of the KAMG membership felt that the time/distance factor involved in
travelling to Brands Hatch was discouraging new members from East Kent. It was decided to
start an East Kent Section which would meet on a different night each month to that of the
KAMG.
The East Kent section grew from strength to strength and gained a very strong and
enthusiastic membership. In March 1992 it was felt that the East Kent section would be able
to cater better for its members if it was a completely autonomous group and so the East Kent
Advanced Motorcyclists, or EKAM, was formed.
We are affiliated to the Institute of Advanced Motorists (Group No. 2206) and share their
purposes and goals, and in May 1996 we received charity status (Registered No. 1055176)
with the principle aim being:-
"For the public benefit to promote the improvement of the standard of driving and the
advancement of road safety."
